When Marilyn separated from Joe DiMaggio in the autumn of 1954, speculation was rife that the reason was because she was having an 'affair' with her vocal coach Hal Schaefer.  

In the July of that year, Schaefer tried to commit suicide by drinking a poisonous solution which contained typewriter-cleaning fluid.  Rumours about his affair with Marilyn went public after she visited him in the Santa Monica Hospital after his unsuccessful suicide attempt.
