John Carroll, who had a long acting career, in 1947 invited  the then struggling starlet Marilyn to live with him and his wife Lucille Ryman at their west Hollywood apartment.  It was rumoured during that time that he and Marilyn became lovers.  She reportedly asked his wife to divorce him so she could marry him instead.  However Carroll once told the writer Bob Slatzer: “The only thing I ever did with Marilyn was to try to teach her how to sing.”
