“Get this straight: Mr Schenck and I were good friends. I know the word around Hollywood was [that] I was Joe Schenck's girlfriend, but that's a lie.” Marilyn Monroe to Maurice Zolotow.
When Joseph Schenck met Marilyn, she was merely a contract player while he was the mogul who had established 20th Century Fox and was also the studio's head of production. He was nearly 70 and she was 21 when he spotted her at the studio parking lot and asked his chauffeur to stop so he could speak to her. He invited her to his house for dinner, the first of many Marilyn attended at his Holmby Hills Mansion. Despite her repeated denials, Hollywood gossip was that she was 'Joe Schenck's girl'.
It was reported that Schenck engineered Marilyn's Columbia Pictures contract in 1948 which led to her first co-starring role in Ladies of the Chorus. And when Marilyn subsequently returned to Fox, Joe was there to guard her interests.
