JOHNNY HYDE

Occupation: Agent
Place of Meeting: Racquet Club
Year Relationship began: 1949
Type of Relationship: Relationship

The man most credited with 'discovering' Marilyn Monroe first met her at a racquet club in Palm Springs in 1949. He was one of Hollywood's most powerful agents but Marilyn was at that time still in love with Fred Karger.  Hyde fell for Marilyn in a big way, and in time he became her agent/manager/advisor/confidant/teacher/ and mentor as well as her lover and friend.  He repeatedly begged Marilyn to marry him but she always turned him down saying that although she loved him, she was not in love with him.  Hyde left his wife and moved Marilyn into his new home in Beverly Hills, but she still refused his marriage overtures.

Hyde was responsible for Marilyn landing parts in The Asphalt Jungle (1950) and All About Eve (1950), which was a major breakthrough for Marilyn and secured a new studio contract for her with 20th Century-Fox.
